What I’ve Learned from Teaching Elders

In this video I summarize my reflections from teaching the elderly population. People who have lived full lives and have something to share.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the kidney shares a relationship with the heart (the element that is the most expressive, think fire). In order to have fire, we have the water (kidney) that supports it. What an interesting balance to have the organ that’s the most inward energy to balance out the most outward facing energy.

Some of the people who come to me are people who are retired. They’ve spent all of their lives pretty gosh dang active. Sometimes through symptoms we see that they’ve lived full lives. Symptoms that show, oh you’re pretty fatigued in this area. In this state, the body is asking for recovery.

A few ways that I've embraced this healing principle, as a younger person, is by choosing my actions wisely. Like cooking for myself, which slows me down and gets me in touch with my hands. Another way to embrace the restful energy is to embrace the saying “stop and smell the roses.”

Kids and animals are the beings that do this the best. Life isn’t all sunshine and roses. That said, to find ways throughout the day to embrace the innocence in our heart, which we all have.
